Wood Working
Learning to work in a wood shop brings opportunity to work with a wide variety of both hand and power tools. Volunteers and students have the opportunity to work with drills, saws, sanders, lathes, joiners and multiple hand tools. Wood working requires creativity, the ability to do math, layout projects, plan, and complete simple or complex tasks.
The wood shop gives us plenty of one-on-one time with the students. Due to this we are somewhat limited in the number of students we can take on at any given time.
Our volunteers learn the trade as they work in the shop helping us to build our main products. We modified the design of our deck chairs from an old design found on the internet. With our design the 2-piece chair quickly comes apart and stores together for convenience.
We make the chairs in two styles. Our first option is made from weather treated pine and is painted with exterior enamel. These are available in white, blue, red, and dark green.
For a limited time we are working with mahogany. The mahogany chair comes finished with teak oil for a deep natural red finish. We have made a limited number of custom orders. You can find a custom mahogany shelf unit we made that sits at Picasso's Coffeehouse as you walk in the front door. We have made custom folding deck tables and free standing prize wheels. We look forward to the opportunity to make custom orders for our supporters. It helps to stretch our skills and discover new abilities.
Recycled Pallet Furniture
We recently began making furniture from recycled hardwood pallets. The material is mostly red oak with a slight mix of hickory and walnut. We are making compost bins, garden benches, and picnic tables. You can see pictures of the finished product on our Facebook page.
